Bread Bin Dilemma

Thank you for all your lovely get well wishes for Imogen, she's much better now just a bit of a cough, but you know how they can drag on...

Just a quick post about perhaps not the most interesting subject, the bread bin. It drives me potty! It's not particularly big, but there are only 3 of us living here and work space is at a premium. This is how I usually find it...

I'm sure you're thinking it's nice and tidy (except for the crumbs, I should have wiped the surfaces first). It may look tidy, but as you may have spotted, the bread isn't in it, but next to it. This frustrates
me, what's the point of having a container for it if no one uses it!

So is it empty? Not today, it has some breadcakes (rolls or whatever your regional name for them is, it took me years to get used to saying breadcakes, but now can't imagine calling them anything else) and wraps in it.

I cleaned it out, wiped it over, had a mutter about no one else wiping it.

Popped the bread in it, where it belongs.

The breadcakes went in with the bread too and the wraps had to stay on top as they're too big and there isn't any space left inside.

I'm still not really happy with it. How do you store your bread? There must be a better way, a way that doesn't entail lifting the wraps off the top and putting them back again after also putting the bread back inside, because this method is apparently a bit taxing for everyone (I say everyone so as not to name and shame). All ideas keenly welcomed.

Take care

  1. Nothing fancy at my house. Bread loaf is on top of refrigerator and wraps are in a drawer in the refrigerator. If I had any rolls/bread cakes they would be in a bag sitting on the kitchen countertop.

  2. I keep my bread in the freezer. It thaws quickly and never goes stale.

  3. Growing up we had a bread box on the counter but I've never had one in my kitchen. I too keep my bread in the freezer and it keeps it fresh; but there's only two of us. I'd love a bread bin if my family was still at home. I hope you're week is of to a good start :)

  4. I put mine in a plastic tub, a bit like a big lunch box. Glad your daughter is feeling a little better x

  5. Same as Happyone. Our bread is in the freezer. There are only two of us at home and we eat VERY little bread. So the freezer is the only way to not have a lot of waste.

  6. I make all my bread, slice the loaves and freeze, slice the rolls and freeze. No waste, no crumbs and no bin. Works a treat.

  7. I must admit, we gave up on the bread bin years ago, they just never seem to be big enough, and yet they take up such a lot of room. Our bread goes in the fridge, where it seems to stay fresh for much longer, or if we have a lot, it gets split and some of it goes in the freezer.

  9. We keep white bread in one of the wall cupboards, (with crackers and all my various teas), wholemeal bread i usually keep in the freezer because there is only me that eats it, i take out what i need when i need it.

Sometimes we are just fighting a constant battle, with me it's shoes, no one ever puts them away!

  10. Bread is always irritating! We also freeze our bread, but especially the wraps as they are so easy to defrost :)

  11. I have a bread crock but it just isn't big enough so the bread is usually stored in the larder cupboard. I've tried a few different types of bread bins but have the same trouble with them all.

  12. We only have one small loaf at a time, but our bread bin isn't so long, and it is standing on the kitchen trolley so it doesn't take much room.

  13. I can't believe there's someone else frustrated by the won't-put-the-bread-in-the-bread-bin family! I always find our bread beside or on top of our bread bin. Ours is actually very big so there's no excuse for not keeping the bread in it. It's really hard to know what to do that would encourage use of the bread bin.

  14. Sadly our bread just sits very untidily on the work surface - and wraps in the freezer. So no useful tips here.

  15. One of the inevitable dilemmas of housekeeping! Loaf of bread on the bench over the weekend then all bread is in the freezer to be taken out as needed during the week in our house, so I am no help to you in this case I am afraid! Cute breadbin though! xx

  16. The bread bin, there is only 2 of us and I am the only one that makes sandwiches so I am to blame if it is not in the bread bin. Not a lot of help from me.

  17. Hello Cheryl - good to hear that Imogen is feeling so much better. As for the bread bin - well, I have had tin ones, metal ones, pottery ones, of all shapes and sizes, but the bread just get puts anywhere but actually IN one of those containers. My husband has found his perfect way of bread storage - and the most expensive - the microwave oven.........
    Have a lovely week!

  18. I don't use a bread bin! My kitchen gets quite hot so bread would just go moldy in one. I store my bread in its wrapper on the counter top where I can see it, or in the fridge if there is room. Sometimes I freeze bread in usable sized portions so it can be toasted straight from the freezer :-)

  19. I don't think I'm much use, we have a bread bin which is just big enough for a loaf. Any other bread stays in the freezer until it's needed.

  20. Hmmm... I keep my sliced bread in the freezer and toast it from frozen. This leaves room for the rolls etc in a 'crock pot' style storage jar. There's only two of us, so this works fairly well. Jx

  21. I have a basket on the counter for bread and other items I don't want just tossed on the counter. My husband puts the bread in but lines everything else up, a tomato, a banana, why can't they all go in the basket?????

  22. Like many others our bread just sits on the countertop in a bag. I make all our bread so I only have a half loaf out at a time or it would go stale with just the two of us.

  23. We have one of those enamel ware bread boxes and we store all kinds of stuff in it, including bread. But you still have to lift the lid off of it, and put it back. (Sigh).

  24. We have the bread in a bread bin, and anything like the buns, cakes or wraps goes in a cupboard underneath. Some of them are in tins, others just in the bags.
