The Fairies are Staying, Birthdays and Burglaries

It's been a quiet week for us, Imogen was away for the week in the Peak District having fun with the NCS (national citizen service), which I heartily recommend for any teenagers who are 15 to 17. Adam and his family were also on holiday for the week near Great Yarmouth, so no babysitting duties for us either.

We had a lovely day out during the week, went for a drive to Scarborough. We visited the most enormous fabric shop, which left me feeling very spoilt and went for a lovely stroll to breath in all that good for you salty sea air. The views are amazing in both directions.

We passed this rather large gentleman on a bench looking out to sea.

I tried to take a photo of the information next to him, but you have to enlarge it to read it. It tells you a little of who Freddie was, born in a mining village, went to war and how he went into Belsen concentration camp on his 21st birthday and saw horrors that we can't even imagine, how every year he cried on his birthday as he remembered those poor souls and grieved for their dreadful suffering.

It's also been a big week for our little grandson, not only on his first holiday, but he also celebrated his first birthday... gosh that went quickly! I embroidered a bib for him to wear while eating his birthday meals, but we saved his presents for when he came home so parents wouldn't have to take them all the way there and back in the already packed car.

Little Zack had no idea of course that it was his birthday, but had a wonderful day playing with mummy, daddy and his big sister and was exhausted by bed time.

Unfortunately on Friday morning before leaving to come home, my son had a phone call to say they'd been burgled during the night. We're so upset for them, they came home to the whole house being upside down from all the cupboards and drawers being emptied out. All their electrical goods were stolen, but the worse thing was Holly's jewellery. It's probably worthless as it's mainly costume jewellery, but it's priceless to Holly as it belonged to her beloved nana who sadly died last year. What an awful end to their lovely family break, but they're going to remember it as the holiday that Zack turned 1 rather than the holiday when they were burgled.

I've had time to spend in my craft room and made a little toadstool house for the fairies to come and stay in when they visit. After baking the clay, I glued it on a large stone from the beach. I did enjoy making it and definitely want to experiment and make more.

Also a little seahorse (I do love seahorses), just need to thread some of my gorgeous velvet blue ribbon through it so it can be worn as a pendant.

I'm so glad the weather has cooled down a bit and we've even had some rain which we badly needed. It's been a funny summer, but a good one.

Take care
xxx

  1. How positively horrible that your son's home was burgled. It is the sentimental things that are always missed, not to mention that one feels violated. On a positive note how wonderful to celebrate Zack's birthday. One....my he is growing up. Lovely photos of your little getaway.

It's awful that the family was burglered while they were away and Holly's precious mementos were stolen.
Love the fairy house and sea horse. He'll make a lovely pendant.

  4. Your little grandson is so cute. He always looks so peaceful and well cared for in the photos. I'm so sorry about the burglary. What a shame. I'm glad no one was hurt. It's sad when sentimental items and valuables are taken. I hope the thieves are caught. The sea looks beautiful. Gorgeous photos...

  5. Happy first birthday to sweet Zach. The story of that statue was interesting. It certainly IS a large man!!!

Sorry to hear about your son's house. That's a terrible thing to come back too. It's not so much the cleaning up as the feeling that someone has been through your things and TOOK THEM!

  6. How terrible for your son and his family to return home from holiday to that, it's such an awful experience. We were burgled whilst away on honeymoon but my parents cleared everything up before we got home so it wasn't quite so bad for us to return home to. It's something that stays with you for a long time when you know that someone's been in your house, and of course, some things they take are irreplaceable. My sister was burgled and they took my grandma's wedding ring. One already, it's hard to believe that a year's passed by since little Zack was born. I love the east coast resorts, Scarborough is a favourite, we've spent many happy hours there. The Freddie Gilroy sculpture is so poignant, isn't it?

The toadstool house is gorgeous - a new career for you I think as everyone who sees it is sure to want one!(me, me!)

  9. I've never been to Scarborough. It looks lovely and if there is a fabric shop there I may well have to visit.
Happy belated Birthday to Zackary. One already. Time really does fly.
I love your mushroom and putting on the stone really sets it off beautifully. You are clever.

  10. Oh no! what a terrible thing to come home from holiday to. Why do people do these things? I've been on the receiving end of my car being broken into twice and that was bad enough, it makes you feel so angry.
Looks like Zachery had an exhausting first birthday :-) It was Bonnie's yesterday too, hasn't that year gone by so fast?

  11. Dear Cheryl
How awful about the burglary - what a rotten end to their holiday.
While things can be replaced, sentimental items can't. It's good that Zack enjoyed his birthday.
I am enjoying the cooler weather now too - normal August service has been resumed!
    Best wishes

  18. Lovely happenings and not so lovely. So sorry for the sad ending, to their holiday. -sigh-

Thank you for telling me, that my regular print is best, and the size is easy to read. It looks like regular it is, since no one preferred the Bold. :-)

That's whey I asked, I want people to be able to read my blog easily.

I'm so sorry to hear about the burglary, that is absolutely dreadful, I don't understand how people could do this, I would feel so violated. I'm very sorry your son and his wife. I hope they find who did this.

What an awful thing for your family, I can identify with Holly and how she is feeling, I too was the victim of a burglary where my jewellery was taken.
