Hello lovely people, I do enjoy my time in blogland, reading blogs and getting a glimpse into other people's lives. Today it gives me the opportunity to show something else happening in our city of culture. A weeping window made of poppies in Hull city centre.
I went to see it yesterday, it was amazing. Made of the ceramic poppies originally seen in London pouring from a window at the Tower of London.
It's been good to see some sunshine this week. It motivated me to get into the garden, tidy up the greenhouse and get some more planting done.
I planted some californian poppies, cosmos, lobelia and one other flower that I can't remember right now, it's a good job they're labelled!
There are plenty of peas, lettuce and some sunflowers planted.
Cauliflowers, butternut squash, cucumbers and sweetcorn
These next photos were only taken a few days later, lots of the flowers have already germinated, sending teeny shoots upwards. I'm quite amazed how quickly the germinating has happened, I wasn't expecting them for a week or so yet, it is nice and warm in the greenhouse though.
They weren't very evenly sown were they, a little crop of poppies poking through
I need to keep the sunflowers in the greenhouse for a while once they start growing, otherwise the pesky slugs and snails tend to munch on them, the sweetcorn seems be a favourite as well. Sunflowers just starting to germinate now... happy times.
Andrew's planted up few sacks with potatoes outside, so hopefully we'll be eating fresh potatoes in the summer too.
We also bought a couple of roses, one for each side of the pergola, both highly fragranced. I meant to take photos them too, but forgot! There isn't a great deal to see at this point though.
Take care

A cascade comprising several thousand handmade ceramic poppies, Poppies:Weeping Window was originally seen pouring from a high window to the ground below at the Tower of London as part of the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red.
I didn't see the display in London, so it felt really special to be able to see the poppies in Hull and I really do recommend coming to see them if you can before they're taken down. There's some more info if you click here.

Lovely to see the poppies and also your greenhouse, it looks very smart indeed.xx
ReplyDeleteDear Cheryl
ReplyDeleteLincoln hosted the 'Wave' from the London installation last summer and it was wonderful to be able to see all the poppies - I took lots of photos! It is a lovely idea to share parts of the display with different cities in the UK, rather than have everything based in London. Your seeds are all doing really well. I am a bit behind with gardening this year, but there is still time to catch up (fingers crossed.
Best wishes
Ellie
The Poppy display is stunning especially on such a beautiful building.
ReplyDeleteYour greenhouse produce is looking promising. We've planted some seeds ourselves this week so I am hoping we might manage to grow something. X
Hi Cheryl, gosh that poppy display looks absolutely amazing. How wonderful to see it in real life. Your seeds are coming along well - its always hard to plant poppies in rows as they are such tiny fine seeds - I always just scatter mine.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful sight those poppies are. Very moving.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait until we get a greenhouse. We've been looking out for either a free one on Freecycle and in the local newspaper that just needs dismantling or a cheap one in the newspaper and on Gumtree....not a sausage at the moment so we won't be planting anything this year-x-
Oh my, the poppy display is really lovely. I'm pleased you were able to see it.
ReplyDeleteYou've done very well with your planting, always nice to have home grown.
Wishing you a happy weekend
All the best Jan
The poppies are just beautiful, very poignant. There's many people who don't get to see the things on display in London so it's a good idea to display them in other parts of the country. You've got plenty of seedlings on the go, a busy time of year for gardeners.
ReplyDeleteI am envious of your greenhouse! I am hoping to get some seeds planted this weekend. I'll probably put them on a window ledge in the house, where the sun shines in. Just hope the sun stays for a few days! It's been so grey and gloomy.

That cascade of poppies is absolutely amazing! Would love to see it. Thanks for the photo. Your seedlings are doing well. Good luck and good weather!
ReplyDeleteThe poppies are lovely. My son and his girlfriend went to the farmer's market today and bought all they needed to start the seedlings for our garden. I would love to plant potatoes. Have to see how much room we have once the new garden is dug up. Enjoy your weekend!! xo

The poppies are wonderful! I was lucky enough to be over visiting Mum when they were starting the display at The Tower of London and got to (as we were in a coach driving by) see some of them. Really lovely.
ReplyDeleteYou sound like you've got a productive garden. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with mine this year. I was so discouraged by the deer eating everything last year. I'm hoping to work out how to keep them away from our food. There is plenty for them to eat in the garden I just wish they would share!
The poppies look wonderful Cheryl. I was lucky enough to see them at Lincoln Castle last year. Fabulous greenhouse and well done with the planting, you have been busy...Debbie x
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful display of poppies Cheryl. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou look like you are going to have a great garden this year.
Take care.

I'm so glad that you had a chance to see the unique Weeping Window display. In Canada, we wear poppies on Remembrance Day in memory of those who fought and helped in the war.
ReplyDeleteThe poppies look so lovely there...very poignant.
ReplyDeleteYour seed sowing is going really well! I have put a few in this week and need to do some more. Your new roses will be beautiful soon.

I loved seeing the beautiful display of poppies. My oh my, your greenhouse is sooo busy with so many pots of little seedlings. Enjoy those fresh potatoes!
ReplyDeleteWow those poppies are amazing. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI've planted some seeds too. Can't plant them outside here till the first of June.
I envy you your greenhouse. I was planning to sow seeds over Easter but still haven't made my mind up what to plant yet!x
ReplyDeleteLots of lovely seedlings emerging to give you a good crop later this year.
ReplyDeleteMy friend has one of the poppies that were available to purchase, it was wonderful to hold one and see it so close up.
Wowser, you've been busy out in the garden.
ReplyDeleteAll that promise of colour to come.
Thank you for sharing the poppy display.
