Cosy Cushions

I've dusted it off and pulled my poor neglected sewing machine out. I have so many ideas of things I want to make and sew, but I'm not experienced or confident when it comes to sewing. A good place to start is with a couple of tapestry cross stitch cushion fronts that I've made (the only way I can get better is by practising it more).

I've shown this cute Bambi cross stitch before when I was making it way back in January (it was a Christmas present).

When it was finished I put it away and found another one I'd started, but hadn't got round to finishing, then when both were finished they sat next to each other in a cupboard full of good intentions until I pulled them out the other day.

So here we go, I found some gorgeous spotty fabric in 2 different colours, pink and green, to use as cushion backs. Measured and cut it so it would fit the back in an envelope style.... not ready to face zips or buttons yet.

I'm sure a seasoned sewer would whip these up very quickly, I went slowly and cautiously, measuring twice and pinning. It was quite easy, so an excellent project to get me sewing.

After completing the first one my confidence grew a little and the second one was quicker.

Feeling quite pleased with myself, I placed them the sofa.

I mustn't leave it too long before getting the sewing machine back out, find something else that's suitable for my amateur level to build on my confidence.

Do you sew? what sort of projects did you start with?

Take care
xxx

  1. I used to do this sort of cross stitching years ago. I even made a few similar cushions for my, then young, children. I still have one that I never finished and mean to get it out and do some more....and end up knitting usually. One day. Love yours

    1. What a brilliant thing to win even if you sell it on and treat yourself to something else xx

  3. They are beautiful cushions. I started with small projects trimming towels, cot duvet covers, adding trims to pillowcase and the tops of sheets. Then went onto bags and cushions. Just enjoy the process.

  6. You've done a great job, both with the tapestries and the cushion making. I really want to learn to sew but I've never used a sewing machine except for a couple of times at school, many years ago, so I really would be starting from scratch.

  7. Hello Cheryl - you have finished those cushions beautifully! They look lovely, together on your sofa. I did love your phrase 'cupboard full of good intentions' I shall have to remember that! I think you've done really well with your sewing machine, and yes, practice is good, but you have taken such care with the cushions, I'm sure it won't be long before your confidence grows!
    Keep warm!

  8. The cushions are adorable. Cross stitch is so pretty. I did two or three pieces back in the 80's and loved it. I would love to cross stitch now but cannot remember even how to begin. I do sew. Mostly aprons and bonnets and a few other old fashioned things. I always hated to sew because I dreaded getting the sewing machine out. Finding a place where I could leave it open and out all the time made a big difference.

    1. I'd love to have a room to keep my sewing machine out and set up in, I think I've already taken over enough of the house though xx

  9. Oh the cushions are so nice. Well done.
No, I don't sew, but I do knit, make weave-its on a little loom, do counted cross stitch and needlepoint.
I'm just all thumbs when it comes to sewing!

  10. Well done! I do sew, but I seem to go a long time without powering up my machine. I like to make curtains.

  18. What divine little tapestries...so very cute. You have done the most splendid of jobs in whipping up these pretties, Cheryl. I don't believe for one minute, that you are not confident with sewing. By the looks of these gorgeous cushions you will be conquering those zippers in next to no time. These cushions look darling on your sofa!

  19. Thank you so much for visiting my blog. I love your blog and these adorable cross stitched pillows. When I was younger, I loved to cross stitch and sew. I am a friend of Kim (who commented above my comment here) and I love all her projects too. I adore the fabric you chose. It is perfect. Hope you'll visit again and I am signing up to follow you.

  20. They're great! I especially love the bambi style deer, it reminds me of my decorations from my childhood. I'm not great on the sewing machine either - I did manage on zip once...trouble is it's so long ago that I've forgotten how I did it.

  22. Dear Cheryl
I think you've done a great job with these cushions. How about making a simple bag next? I had a few sewing lessons a year or two ago to give me a bit of confidence and a bag was my second project.
    Best wishes
